Tuscia trades Rome's traffic for oak-shaded fairways, medieval hill towns and sulphur springs the popes once bathed in, all within thirty kilometres of Golf Nazionale, the Italian Golf Federation's own course. Add a half-day detour north into Orvieto's white wine hills and the whole itinerary still fits into a long weekend.

The Federation's home course

Morning: Golf Nazionale, 18 holes built for the Italian Golf Federation's own training centre. George and Jim Fazio routed doglegs and forced carries through ancient oak woods on the course then called Le Querce, host of the 1991 World Cup of Golf. The par 3s stretch past 210 metres, so bring the long irons warmed up.

Afternoon: Cantine Capitani, a family cellar on the shore of Lake Bracciano pouring wine since 1974, 6 km from the clubhouse and about 10 minutes by car.

The family estate in Montecchio, home of Montiano, receives visitors for guided tastings: about an hour from the course, and worth building the afternoon around.

The thermal day

Terme dei Papi, 29 km from the clubhouse, is built around the Bulicame spring the medieval popes bathed in and called their own Bagno del Papa. The open-air lake runs warm through the winter, and the resort still draws its mud treatments from the same source.

Terre dei Consoli, 2 km from Golf Nazionale, keeps rooms and villas on site, so it doubles as the trip's overnight base: one hotel booking for the whole itinerary.

Robert Trent Jones Jr., then Orvieto

Morning: Terre dei Consoli Golf Club & Resort, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that has hosted the European Challenge Tour twice. The signature par-3 9th plays to an island green, and tees run from 5,295 to 7,475 metres: pick honestly before the round starts.

Afternoon: for a longer day, drive north into the Orvieto wine hills, where Palazzone and Famiglia Cotarella keep company with older houses such as Barberani and Bigi, a little under an hour from the course. It is a genuine detour, not a quick stop, so budget half a day for it. Closer to base, Colli Cimini, 21 km into the wooded hills, is the easier pairing if you would rather stay local.

The land

Terroir

Tuscia sits on the volcanic soil of the Sabatini and Cimini hills, the same calderas that filled Lake Bracciano and Lake Vico. The minerality shows up in the sulphur springs and in the wines: reds and whites grown on ash and lava-derived clay a few kilometres from the fairways.

History

This is Etruscan and papal country: Viterbo hosted five medieval papal conclaves, and the popes bathed at the same Bulicame spring that still feeds Terme dei Papi today. Golf Nazionale itself was chosen as the Italian Golf Federation's own training centre, a nod to how seriously the sport is taken here.

Climate

An inland climate, hotter in summer than the Tuscan coast and properly wet come November. The golf year has two clear openings, April to June and September to October, with June and September the quiet peaks: see the chart above.

What to pack

Tuned to the weather above. Even in the dry months, keep a light layer for the cool of the wine cellars.

A dark swimsuit

The sulphur water at Terme dei Papi leaves a mineral tint on pale fabric. Bring the swimsuit you do not mind staining.

Wine luggage protection

Between Cantine Capitani and the Orvieto detour, you will want to fly home with a case. Inflatable bottle sleeves or a padded wine case turn a dozen bottles into safe checked luggage.

A wide-brimmed hat

Tuscia's fairways run inland, without the sea breeze that cools the Tuscan coast. A proper hat earns its keep more here than on a links course.

Do I need a car?

Yes. Every stop on this page sits on a rural or secondary road, and the longest drive, to the Orvieto hills, runs close to an hour. Book the car before the tee times in high season.

How far is Tuscia from Rome?

Golf Nazionale is 46 km from Fiumicino airport, usually under an hour outside rush hour: the closest of GolfWineSpa's Lazio itineraries to the airport.

Are visitors welcome at these courses?

Golf Nazionale and Terre dei Consoli both accept green-fee players and ask for a handicap certificate. In high season, book tee times at least a few days ahead.
