Golf, Wine & Spa in Langhe & Monferrato

A round at Golf Club Le Colline in Acqui Terme, a thermal soak 1.4 km from the clubhouse in a town the Romans already knew for its springs, and Barolo and Barbaresco within reach for the day after. Turin is 90 km away if you want to extend the trip north.

Golf and the thermal water at Acqui

Golf Club Le Colline sits above Acqui Terme, a Monferrato town whose sulphur springs have been in use since Roman times. The Stabilimento Curativo Nuove Terme is 1.4 km from the clubhouse, close enough to fold a soak into the same afternoon as the back nine, and the resort spa at Lago delle Sorgenti works the same springs a short drive further into town.

Several small cellars sit inside a 6 km ring of the course, among them Quota Wine & Coffee, Cantina Alice Bel Colle and Casa Vinicola Marenco: enough for an easy first-evening tasting without leaving the immediate area.

Barolo and Barbaresco

The Langhe proper starts about 40 km south-west of Acqui, over hill roads that make the drive longer than the straight-line distance suggests: give the trip the best part of an hour. Barolo village puts Marchesi di Barolo, one of the oldest houses working the appellation, within walking distance, while Fontanafredda's estate in Serralunga d'Alba and Vietti's cellars in Castiglione Falletto sit a few minutes further on.

Alba itself, home to Ceretto and Pio Cesare, and Barbaresco, where Gaja works, complete the loop: allow a full day and pick two or three stops rather than rushing all of them.

Extend to Turin

Turin is 90 km north of Acqui Terme, and the courses at the other end are the best reason to make the drive: Royal Park I Roveri, ranked Italy's No.1 course, and Circolo Golf Torino La Mandria, founded in 1924. Give it a full fourth day.

Closer to home, Golf Club Villa Carolina, 20 km from Le Colline, and the Serravalle Designer Outlet, 33 km out, cover a quieter alternative for a half day between rounds.

January averages just 7.9 degrees: this is not a winter golf destination, unlike the coast further south.

02

May is the wet outlier at 12.3 rain days, more than any other month, including November.

03

July and August hold near 30 degrees with rain easing to 5.5 and 7 days: the most reliable stretch for both golf and the cellars.

When to go

Apr–Jun

Green hills and rising temperatures, but May brings the most rain of the year: pack a shell.

Jul–Aug

Warm, close to 30 degrees, with rain thinning out. The most dependable golf window.

Sep–OctOur pick

Harvest in the Langhe, 24.6 degrees easing to 18.7, with the hills at their most photogenic.

Nov–Mar

Cold, down to 7.9 degrees in January. Better suited to the thermal baths at Acqui than to golf.

What to pack

Tuned to the climate data above. Even in the warm months, a rain shell earns its place in the bag here.

A proper rain shell

May alone averages 12.3 rain days, and most months of the year clear 6 to 9. A packable waterproof is worth more here than it is on the Sicilian coast.

Wine luggage protection

Barolo and Barbaresco are not built for a suitcase corner. Inflatable bottle sleeves or a padded wine case turn a dozen bottles into safe checked luggage.

Comfortable shoes for the hill villages

Barolo, Castiglione Falletto and Barbaresco are all built on steep ridges. Cellar visits mean cobbles and slopes, not flat tasting rooms.

A swimsuit for Acqui

The thermal water at Le Nuove Terme and Lago delle Sorgenti runs warm all year. Bring it even if golf is the main reason for the trip.

Good to know

Do I need a car?

Yes. Barolo is about 40 km from Acqui Terme by straight line, but the hill roads make the drive closer to an hour, and there is no practical public transport between the cellars.

How far is Barolo, really?

About 41 km from Golf Club Le Colline as the crow flies, but budget 55 minutes to an hour on the winding Monferrato and Langhe roads rather than judging it on the kilometre figure alone.

Can I extend the trip to Turin?

Yes. Royal Park I Roveri and Circolo Golf Torino La Mandria are 90 km north of Acqui Terme, close enough for a fourth day rather than a full relocation.
