Royal Park I Roveri

Royal Park I Roveri was Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s first course in Italy, laid out in 1971 inside the wooded grounds of La Mandria, once the Savoy family's hunting reserve. It topped top100golfcourses' ranking of Italian courses in 2023, the kind of course worth building an entire trip around.

Circolo Golf Torino La Mandria, founded in 1924 and one of Italy's oldest clubs with multiple Italian Opens to its name, sits under 2 km away: a natural second round if one day at I Roveri is not enough.

The park and the city

La Mandria's park stretches around both courses, close to Venaria Reale, and is worth the morning even without clubs in the car. Golf Club Druento, 7 km from I Roveri, is the quieter alternative if the two Mandria clubs are full.

Turin's centre is 16 km from I Roveri, close enough to spend the afternoon in the city and be back at the clubhouse for dinner. The area's own wineries, Stuzzivino, Azienda vinicola Rostagno 1918 and Azienda Vitivinicola Rhea, sit 14 to 18 km out: modest compared to what is coming on day three, but a fair local pour.

Extend to the Langhe

Turin is the gateway to the Langhe, and 90 km is close enough to fold the wine region into a fourth day. Alba, home to Ceretto and Pio Cesare, is about 50 km from the city centre; Barolo, where Marchesi di Barolo and Fontanafredda work, is a little further at around 56 km.

Golf Club Le Colline in Acqui Terme, the anchor course of the Langhe & Monferrato itinerary, sits 90 km from I Roveri: near enough to swap one royal park for a Monferrato hillside without losing the day to driving.

Yes, green-fee players are welcome. Given its ranking as Italy's No.1 course, book tee times well ahead, especially through the July and August peak.

Do I need a car?

Yes. The two Mandria clubs are close together, but the city centre and the Langhe extension both require driving, and there is no useful public transport for the wine region.

Is the Langhe extension worth the extra day?

If Barolo, Barbaresco or Alba matter to you, yes: 90 km from Royal Park I Roveri to Golf Club Le Colline, or about an hour from central Turin to Alba, is a reasonable single day rather than a rushed side trip.
