Two golf corners, 97 km apart

Puglia’s golf splits into two separate pockets: two courses in the Valle d’Itria and one in Salento. On the Valle d’Itria side, in Fasano, San Domenico Golf is the seaside links at Borgo Egnazia and a Challenge Tour Grand Final host, with the Masseria courses, 33.3 km inland, as a change of terrain. Down in Salento, 97 km south and in Vernole, Acaia Golf Resort and VOI Alimini Resort Golf, 18.1 km apart, cover the golf side of that corner instead. This is a modest golf footprint to plan a whole trip around, but San Domenico’s name carries real weight on its own.

One winery worth the detour

Puglia’s flagship name is Leone de Castris, in Salice Salentino, behind the Five Roses, made from Negroamaro, alongside the estate’s Salice Salentino DOC Riserva and Per Lui labels. Up near Valle d’Itria, the only visitable option in range is Cantina Soc. Coop. Pietro Tauro, 16.8 km from San Domenico Golf. It is a short list next to Umbria or Emilia-Romagna, let alone Tuscany or Piedmont, and it is the clearest sign that this region’s itinerary is built around golf and the coast first, wine second.

One spa for two itineraries

Vair Spa at Borgo Egnazia, beside San Domenico Golf, is Puglia’s most awarded spa and the only thermal-grade stop in range on either side of the region. Its full name gives the connection away: the spa sits inside the same Borgo Egnazia resort that gives San Domenico Golf its pedigree. Salento has no thermal stop in range yet.

When to come, and which coast to pick

Both pockets share the same seasonal pattern: May is the best month, then October, then April. Valle d’Itria averages 22.5°C with 7.2 rain days in May; Salento is close behind at 22.6°C with 7.8 rain days. July turns very dry on both sides, down to 2.2 rain days in Valle d’Itria and 2.4 in Salento, though the heat climbs past 30°C. The choice between the two itineraries comes down to what each corridor offers beyond golf: Valle d’Itria pairs San Domenico with Borgo Egnazia’s spa, while Salento pairs its golf with Leone de Castris and two coastlines, Ionian and Adriatic, in exchange for going without a spa. Neither one connects onward to a third area on this site: Valle d’Itria and Salento’s only listed adjacency is each other, which makes this a genuine either/or rather than two stops on the same route.
