Salice Salentino is Puglia's best-known Negroamano appellation, and Leone de Castris is one of the estates that built its reputation, working the flatter clay ground inland from the golf courses.

History

Salento is the narrow heel of Italy, with the Ionian Sea on one side and the Adriatic on the other, close enough in most places to reach either coast within a day. Lecce, the peninsula's main city, is known for the same honey-coloured Baroque stonework found across south-eastern Sicily, worked here into some of the region's most elaborate facades.

Climate

May is the clear peak here, and the season holds up reasonably well either side of it; the two months to route around are July and August, when heat rather than rain works against the round. See the chart above.
