Golf between two bays

Morning and afternoon: Pevero Golf Club, laid out by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1972 across granite outcrops between the Pevero and Cala di Volpe bays. It is the anchor of this itinerary and worth two loops if your legs allow it.

Evening: a Vermentino tasting. Siddura is Gallura's reference producer for the grape; ask for it by name at dinner if a cellar visit does not fit the day.

The Bassa Costa, a second round

Morning: Golf Club Puntaldía, 34 km south of Pevero, about 40 minutes on the coast road. A change of scenery from the granite of the Smeralda, and a good excuse to see more of the island's northeast coast.

Afternoon: Tenute Olbios, 25 km from Pevero, one of the newer estates putting Gallura's Vermentino on export lists. Visits by appointment.

A quiet close

With only two courses and two wineries in this itinerary's data, the honest move on a third day is to repeat the best of the first two rather than force new ground: a return to Pevero in the morning, and an unhurried lunch over Vermentino in the afternoon. Terroir

Vermentino di Gallura is Sardinia's only DOCG, grown on the granite soils of the island's northeast. The rock gives the wine its mineral edge, and estates such as Siddura and Tenute Olbios have pushed the grape onto export lists once dominated by mainland Italian whites.

History

The Costa Smeralda itself is a modern creation, developed as a single resort district from the 1960s onward on a coastline that had been sparsely settled for centuries. Pevero, laid out in 1972, was part of that first wave and remains the district's golf landmark.

Climate

A Mediterranean coastal climate, dry in summer and wetter through late autumn. May and October are the two windows worth building a trip around; see the chart above.

What to pack

Tuned to the climate above. Granite and open water mean bright glare even outside midsummer, so sun protection matters more here than the temperature alone suggests.

A second pair of sunglasses

Glare off granite and open water is stronger here than the temperature suggests. A spare pair in the golf bag is cheap insurance against a lost or scratched lens.

Wine luggage protection

Vermentino di Gallura travels well; getting it home in one piece is the harder part. A padded wine case turns a case of bottles into safe checked luggage.
