The mountain's best-known cellars sit on other sides of the cone, treated here as their own day rather than an add-on to golf. Passopisciaro and Pietradolce both work the north slope around Solicchiata, and Benanti covers the wider Etna DOC appellation. None of the three has a distance from the golf course worth quoting here: budget a full day for this loop, not an afternoon.
Etna DOC runs on Nerello Mascalese, planted on lava-ash soil across dozens of small contrade that ring the volcano at different altitudes and expositions. The same grape reads differently depending on which side of the mountain it comes from, which is the reason to visit more than one estate rather than settle for the closest.
Torre del Grifo is the wellness stop on this itinerary, on the Catania side of the mountain. No golf is scheduled for day three: after two days on volcanic ground, on the fairway and in the glass, this is the slow finish before flying out of Catania.

Etna DOC covers the volcano's lower and middle slopes, divided into dozens of small contrade that ring the mountain at different altitudes and expositions. Nerello Mascalese carries almost every red wine here, and a bottle from the north slope, around Solicchiata, reads differently from one grown lower down or on another side of the cone.
Etna is still an active volcano, and in places its vineyards sit on soil that is geologically only decades or centuries old: lava flows have redrawn the map of the contrade more than once in living memory. The same volcanic ash that drains fast and holds heat for the vines does the same job for the fairways at Il Picciolo.
