Two Kyle Phillips links courses above the sea at Verdura, a 4,000-square-metre spa built into the cliff below the clubhouse, and the wine country of Menfi and Marsala within reach for the afternoons. This itinerary runs backwards from the rest of Italy: the fairways play best in winter, when the coast is quiet and the light is low.

Links golf and the sea spa

Verdura Golf & Spa Resort holds two Kyle Phillips courses, East and West, opened on this stretch of coast south of Sciacca in 2009. The East course's par-4 6th runs with the sea on the right and the par-3 13th sits at the water's edge: play both in one visit if the wind allows, and expect it to have a say in club selection either way. The East layout hosted the 2012 Sicilian Open on the European Tour and was ranked Italy's No.1 course by Golf World in 2022.

The resort's own spa, 4,000 square metres built into the cliff below the clubhouse, is the standing plan for any afternoon the wind wins. There is no need to leave the property on day one.

Menfi and the Sicane hills

West Sicily's wine country opens inland from Verdura. Cantina Sociale is the closest cellar, 10 km from the clubhouse, with Cantina Cellaro, Antico Frantoio and Di Giovanna all within 23 km. Cantina Settesoli and the Enoteca delle terre Sicane, both around 24 to 25 km out, anchor the cooperative wine culture of the Sicane hills.

The name to know is Planeta, 25 km away in Menfi: one of the estates that rebuilt Sicily's international reputation for wine from the 1990s on, working the same Sicane terrain as the cooperatives around it.

Marsala, on the salt coast

An hour or so north-west, Marsala is Donnafugata's home ground, 76 km from the resort along the coast.

Further inland, Tasca d'Almerita's Regaleali estate sits in the hills toward the centre of the island, about 60 km from Verdura: a longer detour, better suited to a full day than an add-on to Marsala.

About 79 km, around 1 hour, on the A29dir motorway and the SS115 coast road.

The par-4 6th and the par-3 13th run right along the water, and the wind off the Sicilian Channel has more to say about club selection than the mild temperatures suggest. A packable wind layer earns its space in the bag.

You will want to fly home with Planeta or Donnafugata. Inflatable bottle sleeves or a padded wine case turn a dozen bottles into safe checked luggage.

Is winter really better than summer here?

For golf, yes: January averages 14 degrees against July's 31, and the fairways are far quieter. Summer suits the beach and an early spa morning, with golf pushed to late afternoon if at all.

Do I need a car?

Yes. The closest cellar is 10 km from the resort and Marsala is over an hour away, with no useful public transport linking them.

Are visitors welcome at Verdura?

Green-fee players are welcome on both courses. Book tee times ahead in the winter high season, when the resort is at its busiest.
