The base course, then Trento DOC

Morning: Dolomiti Golf Club, the base for this itinerary.

Afternoon: Ferrari Trento, the house behind Trento DOC, Italy's benchmark mountain method-classico sparkling wine. For a stop with real distance on the clock, Castell Sallegg, 9 km away, keeps a 1,000-year-old cellar across three historical estates dating back to 1851; Oberpreyhof and Tröpfltalhof, both the same 9 km out, round out the wine road towards the South Tyrol border.

The thermal day, two directions

QC Terme Dolomiti, in the Val di Fassa with the Dolomites UNESCO peaks as a backdrop, is 43 km from the clubhouse: a real drive, worth planning as the whole day rather than an add-on. South towards the lake, Garda Thermae in Arco is about 20 km from Ferrari Trento and about 25 km from Club Golf Folgaria, a workable alternative if the group is heading that way instead.

No golf today, on purpose: this is the day the itinerary slows down.

A second round, or north to South Tyrol

Morning: Golf Club Freudenstein, 11 km away, named for the castle it sits beside. For a longer stay, South Tyrol & Merano, this site's sister itinerary, is 14 km north around Golf Club Eppan and the Appiano wine road.

For a genuine detour rather than a day trip, Golf Campo Carlo Magno, 29 km away in Madonna di Campiglio, is a nine-hole classic dating to 1923 and played at 1,700 metres, one of the highest courses in Italy.

Trentino's best-known wine is not a still red but a sparkling one: Trento DOC, made by the traditional method at altitude, with Ferrari Trento as its benchmark producer. Foradori, further south in Mezzolombardo, and San Leonardo, in the Vallagarina, work the still reds the region is quietly proud of alongside the bubbles.

History

Golf Campo Carlo Magno, at 1,700 metres above Madonna di Campiglio, dates to 1923 and is one of Italy's oldest alpine courses, a reminder that this itinerary was a mountain resort destination long before it was a golf one.

Do I need a car?

Yes. The wineries and thermal towns on this page sit on mountain and valley roads with no useful public transport between them. Book the car and check winter tyre requirements if travelling outside the summer months.

How does this itinerary connect to South Tyrol & Merano?

Dolomiti Golf Club and Golf Club Eppan, the anchor of the South Tyrol & Merano itinerary, are 14 km apart: close enough to run both itineraries as one longer trip if you have five or six days rather than three.

Is QC Terme Dolomiti worth a 43 km drive?

If the group wants a full spa day in a Dolomites UNESCO setting, yes, but treat it as the whole afternoon rather than a stop on the way to somewhere else. Garda Thermae, in Arco to the south, is a shorter-feeling alternative if the trip is already heading that direction.

Is September really the best month?
