The Blue Monster, then the wine road

Morning: Golf Club Eppan, known locally as the Blue Monster, opened in 2015 among the vines of Appiano sulla Strada del Vino, the South Tyrol wine road.

Afternoon: St. Michael-Eppan, the cooperative that shares the same stretch of the wine road as the clubhouse, or Kellerei Cantina Tramin in Termeno, whose tasting room sits inside a glass cube designed by the architect Werner Tscholl. For a bigger name with real distance behind it, Elena Walch, 18 km away, is one of Alto Adige's best-known family estates outside Italy.

The thermal day

Terme Merano, the architect Matteo Thun's thermal landmark in the town centre, is about 10 km from the Hotel Quellenhof short course if you want to combine the pools with a shorter, low-key round.

No golf today, on purpose: this is the day the itinerary slows down.

A shorter round, or the marquee alpine course

Morning: Golf Club Freudenstein, named for the castle it sits beside, 4 km from the base, or Golfclub Lana, 12 km out. For the marquee option, Golfclub San Vigilio Siusi, 23 km away in Castelrotto, plays under the Sciliar with the Dolomites UNESCO site as a backdrop.

Afternoon: Kellerei Terlan and Kellerei St. Pauls, both cooperatives 3 km from the clubhouse, make an easy final stop before travelling on. For a longer stay, Trentino & Dolomites, this site's sister itinerary built around Ferrari Trento and the alpine course at Campo Carlo Magno, is 14 km south.

Appiano sulla Strada del Vino, where the golf club sits, is the heart of Alto Adige's white wine country: Gewürztraminer, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon grown on the sun-facing slopes above the Adige valley, cooler and more Alpine than anywhere else on this site.

History

This is German-speaking Italy, part of Austria-Hungary until 1919, and the bilingual signage and Tyrolean architecture along the wine road are part of the itinerary, not a footnote to it. Termeno and Caldaro still run their cooperative cellars on 19th-century foundations.

Climate

A genuinely Alpine climate rather than a Mediterranean one: colder winters, a wet May that outpaces the summer months, and a golf year that runs April to October with October as the measured calm point. See the chart above.

Do I need a car?

Yes. The wine road and the golf courses sit on rural roads with no useful public transport between them. Automatic rentals are limited in this part of Alto Adige, so book ahead.
