Golf on the lagoon, wine in the hills

Morning: Argentario Golf Club, 18 holes threaded through cork oaks and Mediterranean scrub above the Orbetello lagoon. The wellness resort on the property makes it the natural base for the whole trip.

Afternoon: drive inland to the Morellino di Scansano hills. The cooperative Cantina Vignaioli del Morellino runs cellar visits daily, while Fattoria Le Pupille, the estate that put Maremma on the fine wine map, takes bookings ahead. 32 km from the course, about 40 minutes.

The thermal day

Terme di Saturnia, 38 km north of the Argentario. The spring feeds the resort pools at 37.5 degrees all year round. One kilometre downstream, the Cascate del Mulino: terraces of pale travertine, free and open to everyone. Go at sunrise.

For golfers who cannot sit still, the resort keeps its own 18 holes, so a second round adds no extra driving.

The Renzo Piano cellar

An hour north, in the Gavorrano hills, Rocca di Frassinello was designed by Renzo Piano and sits 10 minutes from Il Pelagone golf course. Prefer the coast? Punta Ala Golf Club runs through pines that drop to the sea, with Antinori's Le Mortelle estate 15 km away. Pick one pairing and keep the day slow.

Leaving south towards Rome, the free pools of Terme di Vulci are worth the detour on their own: no ticket, no changing rooms, sulphur water in the open air.

The land

Terroir

Morellino di Scansano is Sangiovese grown on clay and sand hills between the Ombrone and Albegna rivers, cooled by sea air. The maritime light gives it a softer edge than its Chianti cousins, and the cellars here still feel like farms, in the best sense.

History

This was Etruscan country: the necropolis of Tarquinia and the ruins of Vulci frame the itinerary to the south. On the Argentario, the watchtowers and forts of the old Spanish garrison state still mark the skyline. The Maremma itself is reclaimed land, drained and settled over the last two centuries.

Climate

A dry Mediterranean coast with a wet late autumn. For golf, the year has two openings: April to June and September to October, with June and September as the quiet peaks. See the measured chart above.

What to pack

Tuned to the climate above. In June: sun first, one light rain shell anyway.

Water shoes

The travertine terraces of the Cascate del Mulino are slippery. Pack a grippy pair and enjoy the pools instead of negotiating them.

Wine luggage protection

You will want to fly home with Morellino. Inflatable bottle sleeves or a padded wine case turn twelve bottles into safe checked luggage.

Flying with your own set: a padded travel cover is cheaper than replacing the driver you love.

A dark swimsuit

Sulphur water is kind to skin and unkind to pale fabric. Bring the dark one for Saturnia.

Do I need a car?

Yes. The whole itinerary runs on rural roads and the longest single drive is 47 minutes. Automatic rentals are scarce in season, so book the car before the tee times.

Is September really the best month?

For this itinerary, yes: harvest in the Morellino hills, averages around 24 degrees, warm sea and courses in full condition. April to June is the quieter twin.
