Brunello di Montalcino is Sangiovese grown on the galestro and clay slopes south of Siena, aged for years before release. Montepulciano, just east, makes its own Sangiovese-based Vino Nobile. The valley between the two, Val d’Orcia, is a UNESCO-listed landscape of cypress-lined roads and farmhouses.
Montalcino’s fortress and hilltop walls watched over the Sienese-Florentine wars for centuries; today the same hills grow the grapes for Brunello. Val d’Orcia’s thermal villages, Bagno Vignoni among them, have drawn bathers for generations.
