Nine holes inside the spa

Morning: Golf Club Terme di Galzignano, nine executive holes laid out by Marco Croze inside the Galzignano thermal resort park. Water shapes most of the round: the 4th asks for a tee shot to an island, and the 9th closes on a floating green. Play conservative and enjoy it.

Afternoon: Vero Vino, barely a kilometre from the clubhouse, close enough to walk if the round finishes early.

The historic spa town

Mioni Luxury Swim & Spa, 4 km from the first tee, sits in Montegrotto Terme, the twin spa town beside Abano. Abano itself, a few kilometres further on, is the older and grander of the two: the GB Thermae Hotels group still runs some of its most historic addresses, and the pools have been open to bathers here since Roman times.

No golf today, on purpose: this is the day the itinerary slows down.

GEO-certified fairways and a villa cellar

Morning: Golf della Montecchia, 27 holes by Tom Macauley across the Villa Emo Capodilista estate, GEO certified and winner of the Golf Environment Award in 2024. Water decides the card on the par-3 11th and 17th. The estate keeps its own winery, Conte Giordano Emo Capodilista, sharing the same address as the clubhouse: taste what grows on the ground you just played.

Afternoon: Golf Club Frassanelle, inside the 19th-century Villa Papafava park, or Golf Club Padova beside the Renaissance gardens of Villa Barbarigo; either makes a quieter, more romantic finish than a straight cellar visit. Frassanelle's postcard hole, the 15th, plays across the estate's main lake to a well-guarded green. For wine without a detour, Azienda Agricola Carlo Tobaldo sits under 2 km from the Frassanelle clubhouse.

For a longer stay, Albarella Golf Club, 52 km northeast on a private island in the Po Delta, is worth the drive: the only course in Italy fully surrounded by river lagoon.

Terroir

The Colli Euganei are an isolated cluster of volcanic hills rising out of the Po plain, their soil basalt and volcanic tuff rather than the limestone common across the Veneto. The DOC runs from a dry Serprino sparkling white to the sweet Fior d'Arancio Moscato, and some of the wineries closest to the golf course, Vero Vino and Terre Preziose among them, are a walk rather than a drive from the clubhouse.

History

Villa architecture runs through the whole itinerary: Golf Club Padova plays beside the 17th-century gardens of Villa Barbarigo, Frassanelle sits inside the Villa Papafava estate, and Montecchia occupies the grounds of Villa Emo Capodilista, whose family still bottles wine from the same land. The spa towns of Abano and Montegrotto have drawn bathers since Roman times.

Climate

A humid continental climate rather than a Mediterranean one: colder winters than Tuscany, wetter springs, and a summer that runs genuinely hot rather than just warm. The golf year runs from April through October, with September the quiet peak: see the chart above.

Good to know

Do I need a car?

Yes. All five courses and the spa towns sit within a 15-minute drive of one another, but there is no useful public transport between them. Automatic rentals are limited in this part of the Veneto, so book ahead.

Can I golf and take the waters on the same day?

At Galzignano, yes: the nine-hole course sits inside the thermal resort's own park, so a treatment and a tee time share the same address. Elsewhere in the Euganean Hills, budget 15 to 20 minutes between the fairway and the pool.

Is Albarella worth the extra drive?

If you have a fourth day, yes: it is the only course in Italy fully surrounded by river lagoon, 52 km northeast on a private island in the Po Delta. As a single add-on to a 3-day itinerary it is optional, not essential.
