Two ways to count a wet day

Our climate data tracks two different thresholds. A rain day is any day with at least 1 mm of rain, which includes plenty of mornings where a shower passes through and the course dries out by the afternoon tee time. A washout day needs at least 3 mm, the kind of rain that actually puts a round in doubt. The gap between the two numbers matters more than either one on its own. Naples & Campi Flegrei, for instance, sees rain on 10.7 days in May, its own best month of the year at 21.3 degrees, but only 5.6 of those days cross the washout threshold: just over half the wet-looking days on the calendar are actually a problem.

July: dry almost everywhere

Across the country, July is the month where washout days nearly disappear. West Sicily: Verdura & Marsala averages 30.9 degrees with 0.1 washout days for the entire month, and South Sardinia: Is Molas & Chia matches it, 31.4 degrees and 0.1 washout days. Val di Noto in Sicily runs slightly wetter at 0.5 washout days but still averages 31.7 degrees, the warmest reading of the three. The picture changes further north: Franciacorta & Bergamo posts 10.9 washout days in July, the highest reading anywhere in the country that month, and Trentino & the Dolomites sits at 10.3, with the average high only reaching 23.7 degrees. November: the wettest edge of the calendar

At the other end of the year, Naples & Campi Flegrei posts 11.5 washout days in November, the single highest reading in the dataset for any itinerary in any month, up from just 0.9 in July: the widest July-to-November swing anywhere on the site. Rome South & Castelli Romani follows at 10.0 washout days in November, and West Sicily also climbs into double figures, 9.9 washout days against 0.1 in July. Not every corner of the country gets pulled into that pattern: Prosecco Hills & Asolo holds at 6.0 washout days in November and South Tyrol & Merano at 6.1, the two lowest readings anywhere that month, though both sit at average highs of only 12 to 13 degrees. Every itinerary has its own driest window

National rankings are not the whole story. Each itinerary also has its own best month, ranked against its own year rather than against every other destination in the country, and it rarely lines up with intuition. Rome South & Castelli Romani posts its single best score of the year in October: 20.9 degrees, 12.1 rain days but only 8.4 of them washouts. That is not a competitive number against the country’s best October readings elsewhere, but it is the itinerary’s own peak, and anyone planning a Castelli Romani trip specifically should read it that way. Turin & La Mandria works the other way round: its own best month is July, 28.3 degrees with 8.2 washout days, a distinctly continental pattern next to the coastal itineraries that peak in spring and autumn. Dry is not always the same as playable

One pattern is worth flagging so it does not get mistaken for good news: Milan & Monza and Franciacorta in Lombardy, all three Veneto itineraries on this site, and Trentino & the Dolomites each post their single lowest washout-day count of the entire year in January, when cold fronts bring less rain but also less warmth. Average highs across those itineraries that month run from 3.4 degrees in Trentino & the Dolomites to 7.9 in Lake Garda, well below anything most golfers would call playable. Washout days measure rain, not temperature, and the two need reading together.
