Golf near Bologna: the airport nobody thinks of

The backyard nobody expects: Emilia, 29 km

Every distance here is a straight line from the terminal, not a drive, and Bologna’s own backyard is close by that measure: Emilia & Bologna Hills is 29 km out. Golf Club Le Fonti anchors it, and the itinerary’s own course list runs to nine entries, nearly matching Chianti’s ten and comfortably ahead of the Euganean Hills’ five, real depth for what looks on the map like Bologna’s plainest option. Imola Golf Zolino sits 9 km out, Golf Club Casalunga 16.3 km, Golf Club Siepelunga 19.9 km, and Golf Club Le Cicogne 23.7 km, four more courses within a short run of the anchor and a genuine cluster rather than a single stop. Lini 910, the Correggio producer behind a Lambrusco made in the traditional method rather than the tank method most Lambrusco uses, and Cantina Barone, 4.9 km from the course and the maker of Il Barone, a Sangiovese IGP, cover the wine side. The thermal stop, Terme di Castel San Pietro, sits just 1 km from the anchor, and Castel Guelfo The Style Outlets, 9.8 km away, is the outlet stop.

South across the Apennines: Chianti & Florence, 93 km

Chianti & Florence is 93 km from Bologna, a genuine step up from Emilia but still inside this site’s radius. Golf dell’Ugolino anchors it inside Florence’s own hills, and the wine side is Chianti Classico at its most recognisable: Antinori nel Chianti Classico, 12.5 km out, makes Tignanello, one of the wines that defined the Super Tuscan category, and its Badia a Passignano estate occupies an 11th-century Vallombrosan abbey. Frescobaldi sits 12.9 km from the course, and Mazzei, at 29.2 km, is a third name on the same list. North across the plain: Euganean Hills & Abano, 92 km

A kilometre closer than Chianti, in the opposite direction, Euganean Hills & Abano is 92 km from Bologna. Before you leave the airport

Three itineraries in three directions from one terminal, none of them the obvious pick, is exactly why Bologna gets overlooked as a golf airport. Emilia alone carries more course depth than the map suggests, and Chianti and the Euganean Hills both earn a real place in the days beyond it. Anyone comparing airports for a Tuscany trip should note the gap directly: Bologna’s 93 km to Chianti runs longer than Florence’s 14 km to the same itinerary, so Bologna only makes sense here if the flight schedule or the fare makes up the difference, or if the Euganean Hills are also on the itinerary and a single Tuscany-only airport would mean a second flight.
