Circolo del Golf di Napoli sits right at that anchor, laid out by Marco Croze in 1983 inside an extinct volcanic crater, nine holes through Mediterranean pine and maquis with the old crater walls visible from several fairways. Golf Club Volturno, 18.3 km further on, is the area’s full eighteen, a 1998 design by Croze and David Mezzacane that runs from shaded pine forest toward open, sandy ground near the coast. Both courses play to the terrain rather than against it: Circolo del Golf di Napoli’s dual tee boxes let different handicaps share the same round comfortably, useful given the slower greens and the accuracy the maquis demands, while Volturno’s real test sits at the transition holes between the shaded pine corridors and the open, wind-exposed ground toward the sea. Volturno packages run from about 190 EUR per person, a useful marker for anyone comparing the two clubs before booking.

The wine side: Irpinia’s Aglianico country

The golf sits on the coast, but Campania’s serious wine country lies inland in Irpinia, where three names carry the region’s reputation. Feudi di San Gregorio, founded in 1986, built a winery designed by Hikaru Mori that has been shown twice at the Venice Biennale, with an underground rose garden holding 120 varieties; tastings on site start at about 20 EUR and draw around 20,000 visitors a year. Mastroberardino has worked Aglianico since 1878 and pours its Radici Taurasi from frescoed historic cellars, its guided tours running through the family vault and the MAG gallery alongside the tasting. Di Meo, whose Vigna Olmo is another of the Taurasi DOCG’s benchmark reds, rounds out the trio. Closer to the course itself, two smaller estates take walk-in visitors: Azienda Vitivinicola Montespina Iovino Agriturismo, 5.1 km out, and Cantina Mirabile, 6.6 km, neither carrying the Irpinia houses’ reputation but both a shorter detour from the fairway.

Roman steam and modern spa

Campi Flegrei’s thermal history predates the golf by two thousand years. Stufe di Nerone is a volcanic steam complex still working the same rock the Roman aristocracy bathed in, its calidarium carved directly into the stone; Mozart’s family and Hans Christian Andersen both visited centuries later, and a day ticket today runs to about 30 EUR online. Giardini Poseidon Terme, 25.5 km out, and Terme di Agnano, 6.1 km, cover the resort end of the spa side, with Negombo, 21.9 km, and Fonte delle Ninfe Nitrodi, 22.6 km, further along the same coast for anyone extending the trip by a day.

When to come

Campi Flegrei’s own climate data puts May clearly ahead of the rest of the year: 21.3 degrees with 5.6 washout days, the best balance of warmth and dry fairways the area gets. July runs hotter, at 29.7 degrees, but the rain is almost gone by then, under one washout day for the whole month and just 10.6mm of total rainfall, the driest stretch on the calendar if the heat is manageable. Before you leave the airport

If the group includes a non-golfing day, La Reggia Designer Outlet sits 26.1 km from the course, the only outlet inside this itinerary’s reach. There is no second corridor to weigh against it and no rival airport further down the coast to complicate the choice: for a trip built around Naples, the planning stays simple, one direction, one corridor, sixteen kilometres from the terminal to the first tee.
