Golf near Olbia and Cagliari: Sardinia's two doors

Olbia’s own doorstep: Costa Smeralda, 23 km

Every distance below is a straight line from the terminal to the itinerary’s anchor course, not a driving time. Olbia sits closest to its own ground of any Sardinian airport: Costa Smeralda is 23 km out, anchored by Pevero Golf Club, one of the itinerary’s iconic courses, with Golf Club Puntaldìa a further 34.3 km up the coast. The wine here is Vermentino di Gallura country: Capichera, 10.2 km from the course, and Siddura, both iconic producers of the denomination, with Tenute Olbios, 24.6 km out, open for visits. No thermal spa or outlet shopping appears on this stretch of coast in the current map, so treat Costa Smeralda as a golf-and-wine trip rather than a full corridor, the golf and the Vermentino carrying the itinerary on their own.

Cagliari’s own doorstep: South Sardinia, 29 km

South Sardinia plays the same role for Cagliari that Costa Smeralda plays for Olbia, the closest itinerary to the terminal at 29 km, anchored by Is Molas Golf Club, another of the itinerary’s iconic names. The wine side runs deeper here than at Costa Smeralda: Agricola Punica, 23.4 km, and Cantina Santadi, 26.2 km, are both iconic names, and Argiolas, 44.1 km out, makes Turriga, one of the wines most associated with Sardinian reds anywhere in the world. Forte Village Acquaforte Spa covers the thermal side, and Sardinia Outlet Village, 34.7 km from the course, is the only outlet stop in reach of either southern itinerary, useful if the trip runs to a full week rather than a long weekend.

The third door: Alghero and West Sardinia

West Sardinia, built around the Is Arenas & Sinis coast, is the one itinerary genuinely closer to Alghero than to either main airport: 67 km from Alghero against 101 km from Cagliari and 128 km from Olbia, a gap wide enough that Alghero is worth booking on its own for this stretch. Golf Club Is Arenas is the anchor course, another of the itinerary’s iconic names. The wine side holds two estates that share a surname but are not the same producer, worth keeping straight before booking a tasting: Contini 1898, known for Pariglia, a Vermentino di Sardegna, and Azienda Vinicola Contini, 13.6 km from the course, the maker of Vernaccia di Oristano, a denomination unique to this part of the island. Terme Is Bangius, 28 km out, is the itinerary’s thermal stop, and there is no outlet shopping listed for this stretch, so the trip here stays built around the golf, the two Continis and the coastline rather than a longer multi-stop corridor.

When to come

All three itineraries share the same peak month, May, each posting its own best reading of the year: Costa Smeralda at 21.2 degrees, South Sardinia at 22.2, West Sardinia at 21.8, all with four to five washout days. Costa Smeralda holds up best afterward, still posting its second-best month in October at 22.1 degrees rather than fading into the summer heat like the other two, both of which fall back to April as the safer alternative, South Sardinia at 18.6 degrees and West Sardinia at 18.7. By July and August all three climb past 30 degrees, playable early in the day but well past the island’s own best golfing weather. Before you leave the airport

With three separate airports and three separate itineraries, the practical question for Sardinia is which coast comes first, not which flight to book. Olbia and Cagliari get travellers there fastest for the two main itineraries, each under 30 km from terminal to tee. Alghero is worth the look only if West Sardinia’s quieter courses and Vernaccia country are the actual plan, since neither of the two busier airports gets there in anything like the same distance. West Sardinia is, in fact, the one itinerary all three Sardinian airports reach, at very different costs: 67 km from Alghero, 101 km from Cagliari, 128 km from Olbia, a spread wide enough that the airport genuinely changes the trip.
