Golf near Rome Fiumicino: four itineraries, one airport

Before you even leave the airport ring

The closest tee to the runways is Golf Club Parco de’ Medici, a few minutes from Fiumicino on the Rome side of the ring road, with the Sheraton hotel sitting right on the course: the classic first-night or last-morning round of a Roman golf trip. The Parco Commerciale Da Vinci retail park is minutes away for anyone in the group who prefers shopping to swings, and the QC Termeroma spa closes the day in an ancient Roman estate near the airport.

The closest tee time: Castelli Romani, 33 km

Thirty-three kilometres south of the terminal, Castelli Romani is the fastest way from baggage claim to a first tee anywhere on this site. Castelgandolfo Golf Club Resort sits in the crater lake country south of Rome, and the itinerary extends on toward Nettuno and the Agro Pontino, where Casale del Giglio anchors both the golf and the wine side of the trip. Bring the handicap card: several of these clubs still run on the old member-club model rather than an online booking engine.

Ryder Cup country: Rome North, 38 km

Five kilometres further out, Rome North is where Lazio’s golf history actually lives. Marco Simone Golf and Country Club hosted the Ryder Cup in 2023, and the itinerary’s other two clubs carry pedigree of their own: Olgiata held the Eisenhower Trophy in 1964 and the World Cup twice, in 1968 and 1984, and Parco di Roma, laid out by P.B. Dye, plays with the dome of St Peter’s visible on the horizon from parts of the course. Few golf itineraries anywhere put that view on the scorecard.

The double World Cup itinerary: Tuscia, 46 km

Another eight kilometres and you reach Tuscia, the itinerary around Viterbo that is also the traditional home of the Italian Golf Federation. Golf Nazionale hosted the World Cup in 1991, and Terre dei Consoli, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design nearby, plays an island green that has become the itinerary’s signature hole. When the round is done, Terme dei Papi is close enough for an afternoon soak in the same sulphur springs used since Roman times.

Worth the extra distance: Maremma, 111 km

At 111 km, Maremma is a genuine step up in distance from the other three, closer to two hours than one. It earns the drive: this is the itinerary built around Argentario Golf Club, Morellino di Scansano wine country, and the thermal pools of Terme di Saturnia, all measured and mapped on its own page. Treat it as a base for a longer stay rather than a day trip out of Rome.

Before you leave the airport

Two things are worth knowing before the rental car pulls away. QC Termeroma runs a full thermal spa inside Fiumicino itself, useful for a jet-lagged first afternoon or a last soak before a flight home. And if the trip includes a non-golfing day, the Castel Romano Designer Outlet sits inside the Castelli Romani itinerary, 14 km from Castelgandolfo, an easy detour for anyone travelling with family.
